Program Note
Euphoria, for alto saxophone and piano, is a piece that sounds exactly as it is titled: happy! The piece opens with an infectious dance inspired by klezmer music. The toe-tapping dance transitions into a cadenza, modeled after the doina, a free, expressive form in klezmer music known for its ornamentation and improvisation characteristics. Suddenly, the cadenza leads into a final eruption of euphoric happiness. This piece is not only a celebration of being happy but also a command to retain joy despite all of life's challenges.
